African POWER currently works in northern Uganda among communities of Pader, one of the districts most affected by twenty years of war between rebels of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and Ugandan government forces.

Our office is located in the Trading Centre of Lira Palwo initially serving over twenty five villages.

We are currently focused on three areas of work:

1. Environmental and basic health
   

   Tradition and culture govern the relationship and interdependence between communities and their environment. Taboos and superstitions deter wanton abuse of environmental resources including plants, animals and water resources the communities depend on for food, medicine, housing and commerce. These traditional belief systems also enforce peace and social order.

2. Culture & Community Development (Village Stores)
   

   The Village Store offers villagers a sense of ownership and they seem to take better care of the items than when they were distributed as aid to individuals. It is operated at the community level eliminating bureaucracy that would normally delay the dispatch of needed provisions.

3. Science & Technology Education
   

   Most children who attend schools in the village do not speak or read enough English to understand science text books. We plan to work with the government and other NGOs to translate text books and other educational materials and to help write books in local languages. Presently all science books are offered in English and village school children often leave school without the basic knowledge to improve even the subsistence life they often return to.
